Road transport evolution: autonomous vehicles and loading bay time slots

When it comes to exciting developments in the automotive industry, 2025 was an interesting year, with all eyes turned on Volvo’s and Daimler’s latest advances:

The Swedish car maker Volvo presented the solution components of its ambitious “Drive me” project in February this year. As part of this project, Volvo, transport authorities, legislators, and the city of Gothenburg work together towards their goal to integrate 100 self-driven cars into real-life traffic – with ordinary people in the driver’s seat – on specific roads around Gothenburg in 2025.

Then in May 2025, the first-ever license for operating a self-driven truck on a public highway in the US was granted to the German automotive giant Daimler. Named “Freightliner Inspiration”, their impressive truck drives autonomously on open roads. A human driver is still required to be on board in order to intervene if necessary – and to manually take over once city limits are reached and more complex traffic scenarios need to be managed.

Fascinating developments. It makes me wonder though, if we are ready to welcome such vehicles into our own supply chain operations at this point in time. The objective in these two examples is to optimise the efficiency of road transportation, reduce emissions, and improve safety records in all markets.

If we are serious about these goals, we must also take a look not only at the journey itself, but also at the actual start and end of it - which takes place at the loading bays of our own warehouses, in our own yards. Unfortunately, with all the technology we’re using today when we are on the road, we still encounter a lot of hold-ups when picking-up or delivering goods at point of receipt and drop-off at warehouses all around.

Optimising loading bay operations

Long wait times at the loading bay are frustrating and expensive, and not just for truck drivers. Waiting to load and unload is “lost time” for forwarders, too. And traffic jams in the yard at peak times also lead to challenges for warehouse operators and manufacturers, including strains on their facility crews and resource planning: sometimes the pace is hectic, and sometimes the employees are waiting for work. Many businesses see a need for optimisation when it comes to the activities at their loading bays.

Generally, optimisation in the area of transportation always requires an end-to-end approach, and it’s important not to isolate but integrate all involved areas, such as administration, warehousing, shipping, and, of course, the loading bay operations as an extended arm of the warehouse. It’s a bit of a “stepchild area”, really, as most warehouse management solutions do not include it – it’s considered “outside” of the actual warehouse environment. It’s a crucial area, however, as much time and money can be saved when everything runs like clockwork at the loading docks, regardless of whether it’s goods coming in or going out.

Time slot management solutions should provide seamless integration into warehouse and shipping processes, and convenient access for both warehouse operators and third parties like carriers, logistics providers, or truck drivers. This not only optimises loading and unloading processes, but synchronises these steps with other logistics processes for end-to-end optimisation.
