5 reasons Logistics Managers struggle to recruit HGV drivers By Kapoklog Logistics

Recruiting HGV drivers is becoming an increasingly difficult task for Logistics Managers, amongst other things.

Through the combination of limited drivers entering the HGV sector and an ageing workforce, it is almost becoming impossible to recruit - and that itself comes with its own problems.

By not being able to recruit new drivers, your current ones and you gain an increased workload, which means that meeting customer objectives start to also become more difficult.

This problem is industry wide and the solutions are more sought after than ever before. Using a recent report from the FTA, here's 5 reasons Logistics Managers are struggling to recruit HGV drivers:

1 – Not enough experience

20% of responses from the FTA survey explained that a lack of experience from candidates was the reason why recruiting has become more difficult. Across the sector, there is a lot more pressure for Logistics Managers to recruit and fill any open positions quickly, therefore the right experience is key.

2 – Reduction in applications

60% of the 2,000 transport managers who responded to the FTA survey blamed their recruitment difficulties on a low number of applications and a lack of applications that have the desired skillset.

3 – Just not 'right' for the job

You receive an application and the HGV driver that you decide to interview has all of the right skills and qualifications on paper, but then you meet them… 15% of respondents said that candidates with a lack of motivation, personality or the wrong attitude was a major reason for not recruiting a driver.

4 – Shortage of qualifications

There is a high level of training required to become a HGV driver, particularly a Class 1 driver coupled with the desire for the driver to have a 'clean sheet' where their driving is concerned, means that many applicants don't meet the standards that logistics companies require and have to be turned down.

5 – No interest in the job

10% of survey respondents said that, simply, there's a lack of interest in becoming a HGV driver, which is why there is a low number of applications and a contributing factor to recruitment difficulties.

Is there any solution? There just might be…

The problems with recruiting permanent drivers have meant that some managers have had to contact agencies in order to fill their gaps in the short term. Now don't dismiss this solution, they could be able to help you a lot more than you currently think.

Agencies are able to help you pre plan for your jobs ahead of time and can take away some of your pressures when it comes to searching for drivers, and assessing their qualifications. So don't sit and stress alone, there is help out there, and the answer could be an agency.
